Friday 15th July - Scavenger Hunt Part 2

This is Part 2 of the Scavenger Hunt activity write up from the Friday afternoon. Part 1 was posted earlier ...

Activity 5 - Hyde Park Convict Barracks
Scripture and discussion: 2 Nephi 2:27-29
27 Wherefore, men are free according to the flesh; and all things are given them which are expedient unto man. And they are free to choose liberty and eternal life, through the great Mediator of all men, or to choose captivity and death, according to the captivity and power of the devil; for he seeketh that all men might be miserable like unto himself.
28 And now, my sons, I would that ye should look to the great Mediator, and hearken unto his great commandments; and be faithful unto his words, and choose eternal life, according to the will of his Holy Spirit;
29 And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom.
Read: This building has a lot of history. At one time it housed convicts. For many of those convicts, what might have been small decisions and choices, ended up having lifelong consequences, as they were sent to Australia, never to see their loved ones again. What seemingly small choices could you make, that will have lifelong consequences, good or bad?
Activity:  Find the Irish Famine Memorial in the courtyard and read the plaque.

Activity 6 - Sydney Eye Hospital - Il Porcelino Statue
Scripture and discussion: John 9: 1-3
1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.
2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
3 Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.
Activity:  Il Porcelino is a copy of a famous statue from Italy, meant to bring good luck.  Put a coin into the gaping boar's jaws with the intent to let it fall through the underlying grating for good luck and rub the boar's snout.  Point out to the youth, that we don’t believe in luck, but it’s a fun way to donate a couple of dollars to the Hospital.

Activity 7 - New South Wales Parliament
Scripture and discussion: Article of Faith 12
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
Read: One month ago, Elder Callister, the Church’s Area President, gave a lecture here to politicians and many community leaders celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible. The Master of ceremonies at that event, The Honorable David Clarke, one of the politicians from the NSW Legislative Council declared “The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is welcome into our Parliament at any time at all.”

Activity 8 - Sydney Opera House
Scripture and discussion: D&C 25:12
12 For my soul delighteth in the song of the heart; yea, the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me, and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads.
Activity:  Photo opportunity – Opera House and Harbor Bridge!
